Design Matters Poster

Case Study

This case study explores the design process of a podcast poster created for a graphic designer featured in the Design Matters podcast series.

The original design was developed as part of a class project, but it was later revised to better align with the podcast’s theme and more effectively highlight the designer’s persona.

Recognizing Weaknesses:

The original design (pictured to the right), created for a class project a few years ago, was selected to represent the Design Matters podcast series featuring Chip Kidd. However, the design didn’t quite align with the 'rockstar' persona associated with Chip Kidd, prompting a shift toward a new creative direction.

Exploration:

  • What can be kept from the original design?

  • What color palette would provide better contrast?

  • Should the font be changed from the original design?

  • What should be done with the background?

Findings:

  • The graphic of the glasses with Chip Kidd’s name was kept because of its effectiveness in displaying the chosen designer’s Design Matters podcast series.

  • Ultimately, the colors would be changed to follow the CMYK model for emphasis on graphic design.

  • The font chosen for the poster was kept the same as the old design.

  • A slight texture was added to the background to add interest without being distracting.

To enhance the poster's design effectiveness, a contrast checker was utilized to ensure it was readable and with accessibility standards for all types of color blindness.
