Band Poster Redesign

Case Study

This case study examines the redesign of a typography-centric band poster for Jon Spencer: Blues Explosion.

Initially, the poster underwent a redesign, but it has been reimagined once more to enhance accessibility and improve the effectiveness of its type design and hierarchy.

Recognizing Weaknesses:

The initial redesign (image to the right) created for a class a few years back faced issues with color contrast, text hierarchy, and text rhythm, particularly in how the date, time, and location were arranged and displayed.

Exploration:

  • How can the text be rearranged to be more effective with hierarchy?

  • What color palette would provide better contrast?

  • Is there a better font choice that presents the poster more effectively?

  • Should the texture in the background be removed?

Findings:

  • The text was rearranged to have the name of the band artist appear more dominant and have a better rhythm with the time, date, and location.

  • Ultimately, the colors chosen included a deep blue, pale yellow, and deep gray.

  • The font chosen for the redesigned poster is the Rig font family.

  • The texture in the background was kept so it didn’t feel empty but wasn’t overpowering.

To enhance the poster's design effectiveness, a contrast checker was utilized to ensure it was readable and with accessibility standards for all types of color blindness.
